Hello TORCH Alumni,

Hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer!!
My name is Alejandrina Riggins, I am the TORCH Intern for 2010-2011.

I am so excited to be a part of TORCH this year. Coming from an urban and high poverty area, I have witnessed first hand the lack of opportunity that often exists for many young people growing up in these environments. Hearing about the work TORCH was doing to fill this gap it became my first choice for where I wanted to intern this school year. I am privileged to have been chosen to assist in the work TORCH is doing.

A little about me, I received my bachelors in Psychology from Rutgers University in NJ. I happened to be at the right place and the right time following graduation and ended up working in the corporate arena for IBM in their Telecommunications IT Department. I eventually decided to get back in gear towards my ultimate goal of making a bigger direct impact for teens in communities like the one where I grew up. On track for that I am currently in my second and final year at Columbia University Graduate School of Social Work.

I would love to hear your input on how to make the largest impact for TORCH Participants. You know first hand what worked and what didn’t work so much for you during your time in high school at TORCH, particularly in working with new interns every year. If you have any tips, tricks, ideas etc. please feel free to share!!!

For those of you making your way through college or just getting out into the workforce feel free to reach out to me, we can chat about what has and hasn’t worked for me from Not for Profit to Corporate America.

Or just drop a note to say hello! I hope to meet all of you in the near future.

Looking forward to an amazing year,

Alejandrina
