TORCH Reflects on International Women’s Day:

Inspired Change, with the help of TORCH alumni

Our most recent class of graduating seniors began their TORCH careers at JWT, working on a project to create public service announcements for the not-for-profit organization Huru International.  In Swahili, Huru means freedom.  Huru International’s mission is to assist and empower adolescent girls by providing them with the resources and knowledge they need to complete their education and safeguard their health.  Huru has developed a high-quality reusable sanitary pad, produced locally and packaged into kits with other necessary products and health learning materials.  Huru Kits give girls the freedom to stay in school – a cost-effective, simple solution to a complicated problem.

An International Women’s Day update from Huru:  In 2014, Huru International announced the goal to reach their 100,000th girl with kits and empowering education.

On International Women’s Day, Huru would like to say asante sana (thank you very much in Swahili) to TORCH and the alumni who have helped to support their mission.  It is true – Together Our Resources Can Help!

Check out the videos below, created by our most recently graduated class of TORCH alumni during their first year in the program!  For more updates on Huru, check out their blog at www.huruinternational.org/blog.

TORCH Alumni & MAIP Interns Tell their College Tales!

On Wednesday, July 25th TORCH alumni and the 4A’s MAIP (Multicultural Advertising Internship Program) Intern’s gathered at Deutsch Inc. for TORCH Tales from the Campus College Fair X. TORCH alumni and MAIPers spoke to high school students from all over NYC and gave them advice on the in’s and out’s of college life.

Feedback from the high school students that attended the event show how important it is for us to reach out to students who are now in the position we used to be “I’m terrified of the college process but being able to interact with numerous college students and ask them questions helped me not to feel so overwhelmed. ” – High School Student Attendee

2012 TORCH Students Advertise to Live Light & Live Right!

This years’ new TORCH students started their advertising project at JWT eating healthy choices of yogurt and dried fruits instead of the usual boxes of pizza. Little did they know that these choices of healthy eating would lead to their 16 week challenge to create 2 spots for Live Light Live Right. Live Light Live Right is a non-profit organization in Brooklyn that helps obese children and their families live healthier lives physically, mentally and spiritually.

After vigorously working every Monday and even a few Saturdays the students created 2 spots that have already raised awareness of this much needed organization.

Check out the Live Light Live Right spots below.

The TORCH participants worked with mentors from BBDO to research the history of these schools and conduct interviews with students, teachers, alumni and businesses in the surrounding areas. TORCH students are well on their way to creating the creative material for their film documentary, “30 Feet Apart”. Many of our current students and of course alumni come from B.R.E.C. high school and Lab high school, which are literally across the street from each other. Despite the short distance these two schools have vast disparities within their internal school communities.

Stay tuned for more updates on “30 Feet Apart”.
