TORCH Reflects on International Women’s Day: Inspired Change, with the help of TORCH alumni

Our most recent class of graduating seniors began their TORCH careers at JWT, working on a project to create public service announcements for the not-for-profit organization Huru International.  In Swahili, Huru means freedom.  Huru International’s mission is to assist and empower adolescent girls by providing them with the resources and knowledge they need to complete their education and safeguard their health.  Huru has developed a high-quality reusable sanitary pad, produced locally and packaged into kits with other necessary products and health learning materials.  Huru Kits give girls the freedom to stay in school – a cost-effective, simple solution to a complicated problem.

An International Women’s Day update from Huru:  In 2014, Huru International announced the goal to reach their 100,000th girl with kits and empowering education.

On International Women’s Day, Huru would like to say asante sana (thank you very much in Swahili) to TORCH and the alumni who have helped to support their mission.  It is true – Together Our Resources Can Help!

Paying Summer Internship at a top Ad Agency for rising College Seniors and Recent Grads for Summer 2013

Lagrant Foundation Scholarship Program: $5,000 & Career Building Workshops with Industry Professionals in NY and/or Seattle

The LAGRANT Foundation will provide 36 scholarships to ethnically diverse minority undergraduate and graduate students who are attending accredited institutions and are pursuing careers in the fields of advertising, marketing or public relations.images
Program Description:
Scholarship winners will receive $5,000 (undergraduates), $10,000 (current graduate Students) and a trip to either New York or Seattle where they will participate in career building activities. This includes a welcome dinner with a keynote speaker, a day-long career development workshop and a scholarship recognition reception and awards program. During these activities, students will have the opportunity to meet industry professionals, network and gain exposure to the advertising, marketing and public relations world.
Criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Undergraduate students (current freshmen, sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors ONLY) and graduate students
  • Must be a member of one of the following ethnic groups: African American/Black, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino or Native American/American Indian
  • Must be a full-time student at a four-year, accredited institution, carrying a total of 12 units or more per semester/quarter
  • Must have a minimum of 2.75 GPA for undergraduates & 3.2 GPA for graduate students
  • Must major in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing or advertising or must minor in communications with desire to pursue a career in public relations, marketing or advertising
  • Must have at least one year to complete his/her degree from the time the scholarships are awarded

We are looking for a creative marketing manager to develop and execute ideas as well as present to existing and new clients in digital media, traditional media and branded entertainment. The Manager, Innovations helps to develop marketing and digital breakthroughs which help our clients navigate the emerging media and evolving technology landscape. We take advertising to the next level by embracing emerging trends and technologies to reach the consumer in revolutionary ways. This is a special division created specifically to keep tabs on the latest developments in technology, media, marketing, consumer behaviors, trends in pop culture and the digital world. Major accounts in film, television, gaming, beverages, auto and others.

Responsibilities:

Stay up to date on trends in technology, culture, and advertising, and be able to translate trends into new opportunities for business growth across all marketing platforms including print, outdoor, TV, events and digital opportunities.
Lead and participate in Innovations brainstorming sessions daily for client-specific campaigns. Assist the group in coordinating with internal departments including the IPG Lab for investigation and assessment of emerging technologies and platforms.
Develop relationships with vendors and source new leads in emerging media platforms.
Manage new media campaigns from ideation to completion through entire agency cycle.
Prepare and deliver presentations, both internally and externally, around client-specific Innovations ideation, trends, opportunities and strategy in the area of digital media and emerging technologies
Support the group in its outreach programs to academic institutions, the investment and venture capital community, R&D hubs as well as relevant industry forums and associations
Desired Skills & Experience

Successful candidates will have 3+ years in advertising, media, digital, broadband, wireless companies or related marketing background, and have an entrepreneurial spirit yet work well in a corporate environment.
Must have extensive knowledge of the emerging technologies and existing media and be able to develop creative uses to help our advertisers ‘break through the clutter’.
Must have strong presentation skills and be able to generate ideas.
Must be a person who is passionate about innovation and delivers that passion in all areas of ideation and execution. Advertising Industry knowledge is preferred but not required.

Literally an Infectious Advertisement

I came across an article in ADWEEK.com about an advertisement for the new movie Contagion and I couldn’t help but post this!

This out of home advertisement, created and displayed in Canada, for Contagion, a new movie about a deadly virus that is contagious within seconds of coming in contact with it, is made out of actual growing bacteria!! While this does gross me out and make me cringe I must admit it’s super cool! This also shows that being creative really has no limits.
